Coconut water comes from the inner cavity of the coconut and contains sugar, fiber and proteins as well as antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. With all this goodness it may be the best sports drink known to man and is an excellent source of hydration and electrolyte replacement after a work out since it is 10 times more hydrating than water.

Here are some quick facts about this "water" that will have you racing to the store to pick up a bottle.

  • 10 times more hydrating than water
  • No high fructose corn syrup found in many sports drinks. HFCS actually promotes fat storage in the body so don't drink them after you have just worked out
  •  Less fat than whole milk
  •  More potassium than a banana. This is one of the great benefits of having a sip post workout
  • No cholesterol
  • Fewer calories than a glass of orange juice.
  • Less sodium (25 mg) than sports drinks (41 mg) and way less than energy drinks (200 mg)
  • Just 15 grams of naturally occuring sugar
  • Low glycemic so it won't cause your blood sugar to spike followed by a crash
  • 3 grams of fiber

So ther you have it! Drink nature's sport drink any time you need to hydrate or need a pick me up in the middle of the day. I buy mine at Whole Foods and find it to be just a bit sweeter than water with a similar consistancy and texture...maybe just a tiny, tiny bit "thicker" feeling. I did find it to be good and would much rather drink it than a sports drink.

Tip
Here is a great recipe to spice up your coconut water and make it an extra special treat.
